Riverkin combines in-stream measurements, weather radar and machine-learning models to to predict water and sediment movement in real time.

Each sensor we add improves the model for every other site. National gauges cost tens of thousands of francs and sit on major rivers. Ours are cheap enough to put into creeks, where the water starts.

MEASURE

Sensors record water temperature, water level and turbidity in rivers and creeks. With site calibration, turbidity readings convert into suspended sediment concentration.

CONNECT

Readings are sent every five minutes over low-power radio and satellite, creating a continuous record even at remote sites.

PREDICT

Customers view live data and receive threshold alerts. Machine-learning models combine those readings with weather-radar data to predict when and where a flash flood will arrive.

In June 2024, 80 millimetres of rain fell on the Misox valley in two hours. There was no special weather warning. Six hydropower plants were damaged; one was clearing mud from its tunnel for months.

Riverkin tracks water and sediment before it reaches hydropower infrastructure, giving operators time to close inlets or divert water, protect turbines and pull crews out of the riverbed.

Riverkin predicts when and where heavy rain will cause flooding at a risk point, giving teams time to evacuate before the water arrives. Or time to deploy barriers and divert water and protect their assets.

WATER AND SEDIMENT MONITORING FOR RESEARCH

Riverkin records water temperature, pressure and turbidity every five minutes, with remote data access for hard-to-reach sites. Site-specific calibration provides suspended sediment concentration. Sensors from CHF 2’000.

Riverkin was founded by a hydrologist who spent four years measuring alpine rivers and published the peer-reviewed research behind the sensor. Today the technology runs in the field for energy utilities, fire brigades and research institutions on four continents.
